Kanha Tiger Reserve, also known as Kanha-Kisli National Park, is one of India’s premier tiger reserves and the largest national park in Madhya Pradesh, a state located in the heart of India. The present-day Kanha area is divided into two wildlife sanctuaries, Hallon and Banjar, covering about 250 km² and 300 km² (120 sq mi) respectively. Kanha National Park was established on June 1, 1955, and in 1973 it was declared Kanha Tiger Reserve. Today, the core area extends over about 940 km² (360 sq mi) across Mandla and Balaghat districts. Together with a surrounding buffer zone of approximately 1,067 km² (412 sq mi) and the neighboring 110 km² (42 sq mi) Phen Sanctuary, it forms the larger Kanha Tiger Reserve landscape, making it the largest national park in Central India. Kanha Tiger Reserve is frequently ranked among the top tourist destinations in the country. The park is home to a significant population of Royal Bengal tigers, along with Indian leopards, sloth bears, barasingha (swamp deer), and Indian wild dogs (dholes). The forest portrayed in Rudyard Kipling’s classic novel “The Jungle Book” was inspired by jungles that include this reserve. Kanha is also notable for being the first tiger reserve in India to officially introduce a mascot: Bhoorsingh the Barasingha. Kanha is located in both Mandla and Balaghat districts, approximately 30 km (19 mi) from Mandla and 80 km (50 mi) from Balaghat.
